Maybe for the occasional mending... Sep 06, 2009
By taniamc The first one I got was in Jan '09. It lasted me until June, and I started having a lot of problems with it. It started making terrible noises, sounded awful, wouldn't sew straight, stitches were inconsistent, tension was messing up intermittently I had to stop using it for vacation, got back and it was worse than ever. I sent it in for service (it took 3 weeks) and they sent it back saying they had adjusted the tension and found nothing wrong. It worked quietly for about 10 minutes, and then started freaking out again. I took it back and they swapped it out for a new one . The new one started having problems with feeding the fabric and rattling by the second day. The pressure on the presser foot was off, and there was no way of adjusting it. No way to lower the feed dogs either. I ended up returning it for a refund.
I was really disappointed with the quality of this machine. I wanted it to work well, and it did... briefly. It seems Singer has really lowered the bar with their quality standards.

GREAT SEWING AT THIS PRICE Dec 14, 2008
By PSimon This is a remarkable machine especially for this price. it's good to see that Singer is still innovating and making sewing machines that are affordable yet full of useful features. The only thing to be aware of is that you need to buy the hard case cover separately.

Poorly Manufactured Dec 31, 2009
By A. Aversa Ever since this sewing machine was brand new, it has made rattling sounds and jams to a halt, signaling a beeping alarm, especially when hemming denim. Even an experienced sewing lady at Jo-Ann's was surprised that it did not sew through certain parts of denim hems. Now, after two months of okay sewing, the part that rotates around the bobbin has gone so completely out of alignment with the rest of the machine that when the needle goes down it hits rock bottom, bends like crazy laterally, and breaks the needle. This particular machine had the same problems that taniamc mentions in her review. Maybe the Singer 7442 or Brother XL2600I is higher quality.
Edit: After about 1.5 years of using this machine now, new problems just keep surfacing. The needle bar is now out of alignment such that the needle constantly hits the hook, frays the thread, creates much lint around the bobbin, and forms bunched-up stitches. When I wrote the above paragraph I thought that I just had a faulty machine, as it was returned and resold at full-price at Jo-Ann's, but now I am only more certain that all the machines of this model are poorly manufactured and faulty. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MACHINE!

Nightmare before Christmas, Halloween, Summer Vacation Oct 15, 2010
By Dina Tabora This is my first time owning a sewing machine. I bought this machine September 2009. I immediately enrolled into a 6 week sewing class. Into the fourth week the teacher was stopping the class to find out what was making the chirping noise in her studio. The "Cicada" bug noise was my machine. The chirping noise was then followed with loose stitches. I adjusted the tension and proceeded working on seasonal projects and dealing with retreading the machine when it gapped or bunched up thread. After making a dress, a vinyl cape, a potholder, and various tailoring projects through one year. The machine broke today October 2010, a few days after my one year, part and labor, Singer warranty. Rrrr!! The bobbin stopped catching the tread meaning this sewing machine turned into micro hole puncher. The repair shop said its the timing and it will be $60 for the adjustment. I'd like to mention that in the repair shop they had two other Singer Confidence 7563 machine in the repair line for the same thing.
I should of done more research on buying a $200 sewing machine. I would of bought the Brother Project Runway model. The user and consumer reviews are better. Furthermore when the Brother PR machine is stitching it sounds like a whispering jet and stitches way faster than the Singer Confidence.

If it would just stay working.... Jan 06, 2011
By cindy I have had this machine for almost two years now and have had mostly problems with it. I can only use the straight stitch most of the time there is something wrong with it. I sew for extra money as my boyfriend works full time and I cannot even do my work most of the time unless I want to make simple items with straight stitch. I brought it into a repair shop once and of course it worked beautifully when I was there and now doesn't. All we did was carry it around. This machine was a great disappointment and at the time a $500 investment I wanted to make lots of great things with, but end up using my old faithful 35 yr old searskenmore I got at a thrift store 10 years ago for $10.
